The Arabist Review - Wed, 2009-01-07 09:24 By Ursula Lindsey ArteEast has just launched a cool new section called “Shahadat: a Short Forum,” with translations of short stories from Arabic to English. Each installment includes the Arabic original text and quite a bit of information about the author. I quite enjoyed reading, for the first time, the work of the Syrian writer Lukman Derky.

Chronicles of a Female Thinking Out Loud - Sun, 2008-12-07 02:55 By Sou My friends have been raving about Twilight et al, and I didn’t (and still don’t) have the heart to read any of the installments of the series. My friend Fw has been raving about the book since the summer, H was reading it as part of her book club, and A bought (was it the third installment?) for her husband. Meyer’s books have been spreading like wildfire, and here I am, absolutely indifferent. However, all that changed when my brother got his hands on a copy of the movie today. I watched it this afternoon, and had it not been for a phone call that interrupted my engrossed self from watching, I would’ve ever caught myself off guard. Yes, I was actually interested in the movie. How scandalous. read more »
Chocolate Mints In a Jar - Thu, 2008-10-16 19:28 By jessyz I asked my sister to get me this book from Egypt when she was coming because I had read a couple of reviews and was interested in what she had to say. I am always interested when young Egyptian female writers get published. I’ve always thought that the younger generations have lots of things to [...]
Chocolate Mints In a Jar - Wed, 2008-10-15 12:05 By jessyz I started reading this book a couple of months ago and for the first time in my life it took me more than a couple of weeks to finish a book. It was not the book’s fault it was mine, I was busy and then Ramadan came along so I had to put it aside [...]
Kaleidoscope - Sun, 2008-09-28 14:42 By nousha ‘Come, there’s half my plan done now! How puzzling all these changes are! I’m never sure what I’m going to be, from one minute to another! However, I’ve got back to my right size: the next thing is, to get into that beautiful garden—how IS that to be done, I wonder?’

Kaleidoscope - Wed, 2008-09-24 11:09 By nousha
Kaleidoscope - Fri, 2008-09-19 11:56 By nousha I’ve heard so much about the late Ambassador Dr. Ihab El Sherif, who was kidnapped and murdered in Iraq in July 2005, about him personally and professionally with those who have known him and worked with him. Very recently I got to know that he was also a writer, and a very good one I [...]
Kaleidoscope - Fri, 2008-09-19 01:30 By nousha More Quotes…
Kaleidoscope - Thu, 2008-09-18 11:20 By nousha
Kaleidoscope - Wed, 2008-09-17 11:15 By nousha I recently finished reading the controversial novel “Azazil”, written by Youssef Zidan. I was eager to get this novel since my father asked me to find it for him (my father is not usually interested in Arabic literature!). When I started it, I was intrigued. The writer said in the introduction that he asked for [...]
Kaleidoscope - Thu, 2008-08-28 14:20 By nousha
The Arabist Review - Thu, 2008-06-12 14:02 By Ursula Lindsey In what I’m afraid will be a regular feature, I’d like to mention a few books that were recently confiscated from Cairo book stores. The Arabist has already mentioned Egypt’s first graphic novel, by Magdy Al Shafaa’ee (a selection from which was published at Words Without Borders). The reason for this confiscation is officially a charge of “offending public morality” but it most likely has to do with the identity of the publisher, Mohammed Sharqawy (an activist whose torture in 2006 by police became a cause célèbre). read more »
I used to care, but now I take a pill for that. - Sun, 2007-11-25 00:54 By Only one couple were still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: He was laughing at her. "Come on, you can do better than that!" he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room. The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest. The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock. [....] It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall. His body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backward through the ragged veil hanging from the arch.... And Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though a high wind and then fell back into place. read more »
Unnecessary, and not very diverting, musings - Fri, 2007-11-23 10:49 By Yesterday I was suddenly assailed with unshakable conviction that Jughead was surely a pothead. Yes, even fifties Jughead. The food, the half-closed eyes, the lack of real interest in women, the absurdness...it's all there. I came to this realization as I was opening the fridge.

zosome - Sun, 2007-11-11 21:56 By zoss … I am not more sure that my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart — one of the indivisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of Man. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a [...]
