Inner Workings of My Mind - Thu, 2009-12-31 13:34 By nadiaelawady

During the past couple of days, I’ve had a couple of conversations on Twitter and Facebook that were related to Islam in one way or another. I thought I’d share.

Swiss Identity

Not Green Data - Mon, 2009-11-30 12:35 By Tarek
Can you imagine a cube of Swiss Cheese, without its eyes - the holes in it? Or a Swiss Knife without the compass or the screwdriver? This is exactly what the Swiss people want to do with mosques. A mosque will remain a mosques without its Minarets, and it will still function the way it is supposed to function without them. But it will then loose its architectural identity and beauty.

Darwin and Me

Inner Workings of My Mind - Mon, 2009-11-16 17:57 By nadiaelawady

This year Darwin was everywhere. New books came out, workshops were held, conferences organized; all in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and the 200th anniversary of his birth.

This will be the year, I thought. This year I’m going to finally understand what evolution is all about and why so many people are against it. This year I’ll make up my own mind whether evolutionism in some of its aspects runs contrary to some aspects of my own faith as a Muslim. This will be the year.

It wasn’t.

At least I don’t think it was.

Or was it?  read more »

31 August 2009

CAIRO: Ahead of a must-win match on September 5 versus Rwanda in Kigali, Egyptian national team players apparently have agreed not to fast on match day, President of the Egyptian Football Assocaition (EFA) Samir Zaher, said in a press statement. According to him, the squad has agreed that it is not a good idea to fast after a number of religious leaders, including the country’s top religious institution, issued fatwas – Islamic opinions – over the subject.  read more »

Egypt: Female circumcision crackdown

Bikya Masr

30 August 2009

CAIRO: Reports on Thursday said that the first doctor in Egypt was being charged under a new Egyptian law that forbids the controversial practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM. The man allegedly illegally circumcised a young girl last week and is being charged after a local hospital notified the authorities following the 11-year-old girl’s admittance into the hospital with heavy bleeding as a result of the procedure.

According to al-Arabiya news organization, the doctor performed the procedure at the girl’s Minya home – some 400 miles south of Cairo – for 150 Egyptian pounds ($27).  read more »

T-shirts? Where’s a good, old-fashioned cross burning when you need one?

It’s common knowledge that the way to deal with hatred and discrimination is more hatred and discrimination, much like rubbing soil into your shirt will remove mud stains. The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL that has been making waves with their new T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Islam is of the Devil” on the back.  read more »

BM Opinion: Islam is of the Devil?

Islam is of the Devil?

The Dove Outreach Center of Gainsville, Florida, instructed its followers to wear T-shirts that read “Islam is of the Devil.” Yes, you read right. The group that seeks to alienate us poor Satanists through an offensive and even violent medium is called the Dove Outreach Center.

This “Church” has no doubt achieved one of its aims, that is, publicity, after a number of schoolchildren were sent home for wearing the shirts and the issue began to get the attention of the press.  read more »

CAIRO: A German man outside of a Dresden, Germany, courtroom stabbed a 32-year-old Egyptian woman to death on Wednesday after she had won a defamation case against the man, Egypt’s Youm El Saba’a newspaper reported late Thursday. According to security sources in the German city, Marwa Al Sherbini, was stabbed.

Local news reported that Sherbini was three-months pregnant at the time. Her husband, who was finishing a scholarship at a German institute in genetics, was also shot outside the court, moments after the verdict had been handed down.

Sanctioned Sexual Assault

Wandering Scarab - Sun, 2009-04-05 21:21 By Wandering Scarab
Yet another example of what happens when religion enters the bedroom. I have never seen or heard something so preposterous; a law that forces a woman to spread her legs at least twice a week. The following is an excerpt from the original article at MSNBC:

The Afghan president said Saturday he had ordered a review of a new law that critics say makes it legal for men to rape their wives, responding to criticism from around the world that included sharp comments from President Barack Obama.

Islam and Democracy

Abdurrahman's Blog - Fri, 2008-09-12 17:58 By Abdurrahman G
For some westerners, Islam is another word for "terror", and for others, it's just another religion they know nothing about. Islam and Muslims have gained bad publicity since 9/11, with many misinterpretations of the Qur'an, giving the (ignorant) people the image of a Muslim in a white robe with a huge beard with strong looks and always-frowning face.

Among the many stereotypes said about Islam is that Islamic governments are autocratic. It's clear that anyone who believes such a stereotype has never heard of the Caliphs, or has never read about Islam and its history. Let's put that aside and take a look at how Allah teaches us democracy in the right ways.
