It’s been clear for a a few years now that Abu Dhabi has been seething with envy towards its oil-poor, commercial super-hub neighbor. Naturally, it wouldnt make too much sense to compete in the same niche. And so they’ve picked culture (no new news, really, though), a concept which, for some reason, i find hilarious.

I was sitting with the boys celebrating my Egyptian-ness (i.e. sitting around, drinking tea, smoking sheesha and being lazy) and we got to talking about friends living and working in Saudi Arabia or as I like to call it, “The Place Where Happiness Goes To Die”. (No apologies so dont ask.) Anyways we were chatting about how well they get paid to work for American and British companies in Jeddah and Riyadh. We looked at their pictures on facebook trying desperately to interpret the quality of life or lack thereof.

Egyptian identity and Arabism

It is really Strange what’s going on in Egypt ! In the 21st century ridiculous questions that should have been settled long time ago are still going on. The most alarming of them all is are we Arabs or Pharaohs? Indeed, a very ridiculous question. I cant understand how come Egypt is constantly dreaming of reviving its glorious past while Egyptians still don’t know who they are.

The answer to that ridiculous question doesn’t really take a noble prize winner to answer. It is a self-evident fact that Egypt is Arabic. And what’s more, it has always been ever since man went out of caves and will remain like that until the day mankind is perished.
